You've completed your hotel payments, paid for your flight and even got tickets to several events for the weekend but what is it to do at the Essence Festival during your down time?
Depending on who you talk to, there isn’t a such thing as “down time.” Simply walking down Canal or Bourbon Street can connect you with people from all over the world. This festival is NOT the time to be socially guarded or anti-social, and frankly, if that is your natural attitude, challenging yourself to simply say “hi” may open up your world! Remember, it is still a big city with schemers and thieves so keep your money close and travel in populated and well-lit areas. However, the vibe during this festival is contagiously positive and upbeat.
Wake up and grab breakfast at one of the restaurants in the French Quarter. It is probably the easiest time to sit down at any of the restaurants and not only enjoy a great breakfast, but take in the scene. Watch the chef preparing food, witness the southern hospitality of the waiters and waitresses and look at the décor used to keep the N’awlins traditions alive!
Are you a late sleeper or not really a morning person? You will wake up JUST IN TIME to get ready for one of the popular day parties! Essence Festival usually has an official day party but any real Essence Festival-goer knows, there are plenty of unofficial day parties that are the official place to be! While these parties don’t normally include celebrities or flashy lights, they do offer affordable and sometimes FREE admission and a chance to really mingle and have a good time.
The convention center houses a lot free concerts and more importantly, FREE STUFF! From a McDonalds smoothie, to a coke and souvenir bag(their bags are classic! They are cute, useful and always come in handy) there is free stuff EVERYWHERE!!!! It is worth getting up at least one of the three days they are open to collect your free stuff and catch one of your favorite performers, authors or television stars!
Going to the superdome? Don’t write off the Super-Lounge performances! The intimate experience is completely different than the huge dome performance and the connection between the artist and the audience is more nostalgic and personal.
There is so much to do during the festival, there is NO way one time is enough and just think, these are just things to do in the down time which can easily take over your entire day! Stay tuned for more tips, tricks and information on the 2018 Essence Festival!
